Jesus Hosted the poor

November 5, 2013

Gospel Reading:
“Go out to the highways and compel people to come in,
that my house may be filled” (Luke 14:23)

2570122In the gospel of Luke 14.12-14 Jesus was presented as the special guest of honour at the home of one of the Pharisees. Today, in the gospel of Luke 14:15-24 Jesus is the one that is hosting us. When he was invited as the guest of honour he defended the poor. Today as he is hosting the people he showed us how a child of God should organize his party, the kind of people he should invite, so as to bring glory to God’s name.

Jesus told his followers a parable. In this parable a man organized a party and invited many people. Most of those who were expected in the party did not turn up. Instead of getting discouraged or feeling bad the Chief host told his servant to “Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.”

At the end it was actually the poor, the blind, the lame, the outcast, the beggars and other vulnerable people that filled the hall. The first shall be the last and the last shall be the first. Jesus is the only man that recognizes the poor. He does not discriminate. He is the Saviour of all mankind.

There is another big banquet coming up today. The venue for this banquet is prepared. The meal is ready and delicious. The Chief host is Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the Father of the Day is God the Father Almighty and the chief protocol official is the Holy Spirit, the waiters are the angels in heaven.

Everyone is invited to this great banquet. The poor, the lame, the blind, the widow, the orphans and vulnerable children are all invited. Above all, you are also invited to this banquet. God has prepared a banquet for us in the sight of our enemies (Psalm 23:5). Come one, come all, come and celebrate life, come and receive life. As you come, you will be richly blessed in the name of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Prayer Point:
• Thank God for inviting you to his banqueting table.
• Thank him for considering you worthy of his banquet.
• Pray against the spirit of disappointment and discrimination.
• Pray for the poor, the sick, the needy, and the voiceless.

Let us Pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, I sincerely thank you for this special invitation you have offered me. Thank you for preparing a banquet of fat things for us your children. Lord, I know that I am not worthy to attain this banquet. I sincerely thank you for this special invitation you have offered to me. May nothing distract me from attaining this banquet, through Christ our Lord – Amen!
