Daily Reflection: Jesus, the great Teacher

Jesus, the Great Teacher October 7, 2013:

“Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Lk 10:25-37

Who is a good teacher? How does one know a good teacher? What are the qualities of good teachers? A good teacher teaches with passion. He uses illustrations and other available techniques to convey information to the students. a good teacher does not teach just to make money but sees teaching as a vocation. Money or no money a good teacher is ever ready and willing to teach. He is patient, hardworking and dedicated to his job. Above all, a good teacher must be disciplined and God-fearing.

Jesus was presented today as a great teacher. He is the Teacher of teachers and the Preacher of preachers. In the gospel of Luke chapter 10:25-37 we find the above attributes of a good teacher in the life of Jesus Christ. When the scholar of the law wanted to test him Jesus was not in a hurry to answer the question. As a wise teacher he threw the question back to the scholar. “What is written in the law?” he scholar quickly gave the answer he was looking for.

By so doing Jesus proved to the scholar and to all of us that for every question we raise, there is an answer. The answer to all our questions is written within us. The solution to all our problems is within our reach. God has blessed us with answers and solutions to all our problems. God has deposited all the solutions to our problems in our minds and hearts. All we need to do is to go to Jesus who will open our eyes to discover what is hidden within us.

Apart from opening the eyes of the scholar to discover the answer to his questions; Jesus, as a good teacher also told the man a parable that is self-explanatory and full of meaning. He used the parable of the Good Samaritan to illustrate to the man that a neighbor is not necessarily someone who is close to us but anybody, even strangers who are ready to practice the gospel of love.

Jesus wants us to treat everyone we meet as our neighbor irrespective of their tribes, religion and culture. We are all brothers and sisters. We belong to one God. There is no distinction between the Jews and the Greek; between the White and the Black. We are all one in Christ Jesus. Love binds all people together in Christ. What an inspired teaching from a great Teacher!

Child of God, Jesus, our Master and our Teacher has taught us how we ought to treat others as you would want them to treat you. If you want people to love you then you must show love to everyone even to strangers. May nothing separate you from the love and the family of God. May God continue to shower his love upon you. As you apply the teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ, it shall be well with you in Jesus name – Amen!

Prayer Point:

Thank God for the inspiration we have received from Jesus, our great Teacher.
Thank God for the love you have received from the various people you meet.
Pray against the spirit of hatred and enmity which are common in the world today.
Ask God to break the walls of division, tribalism, and favoritism
Ask God to increase our love for our neighbor. Ask him to use you as the channel of his love.

Let us pray:

Lord God, Almighty Father, you have taught me what it means to love. You have also made me to understand that my neighbors are not only those who are related to me but those who are in need of my help no matter their tribes, religion or culture. Lord God, give me the grace to love as you want me to love; the grace to treat everyone I meet as equal and valued children of God. Grant this through Christ our Lord – Amen!
